Gadchiroli
CARVED OUT OF THE OLD CHANDRAPUR DISTRICT, GADCHIROLI IS
FAMOUS FOR ITS BAMBOO AND TENDU LEAVES. THE DISTRICT IS HOME TO THE MADIA
GONDS, A PREDOMINANT JUNGLE TRIBE AND THE DANDER, GONDI AND GONDHAU ARE THE
FAMOUS TRIBAL FOLK DANCES. GADCHIROLI TOWN IS THE DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS.

VAIRAGAD FORT:
An important landmark in Gadchiroli, this fort is surrounded
by temples like Bhandareshwar, Gorjai, Pachpande, and Ekora, which reflect the
culture and the type of architecture of the past. These temples stand as
historical evidences of the rich heritage of this region.
EXCURSIONS
CHAPRALA WILDLIFE SAN CTUARY:
This sanctuary is located in the Vidharba region of
Maharashtra. The sanctuary is home to a variety of wild animals. Out of 23
species of mammals recorded in this area, there are 4 species of mammals, which
are of endangered status, namely Tiger, Leopard, Jungle cat, Sloth Bear, and
Wild clog. There are 131 species of avifauna recorded in the Protected Area of
which as many as three bird species are of endangered status. There are 2
species of reptiles, which are of endangered status namely Indian Python, and
Common Indian Monetary. Others include Black Buck, Wild Boar, Spotted Deer,
Sambar, Barking Deer, Blue Bull, Common Langoor, Harep, Jackal, Mongoose,
Peacock, Jungle Fowl, and Flying Squirrel.
MARKANDA:
Situated on the bank of the Vainganga River, this town is
said to have derived its name from the sage Markandeya who lived and worshipped
here. It has an undoubtedly spiritual character with no less than 24 temples in
its vicinity, including the Markanda temple. The temples reflect the architectural
style of Khajuraho, although no inscriptions exist to indicate their exact age.
The ancient sculptures of Markanda attract researchers from around the world.
